OUTER BANKS, N.C. (WITN) - Highway 12 in Dare and Hyde counties remains closed due to major ocean overwash.
Highway 12 is closed between the Marc Basnight Bridge and Rodanthe.
It’s also closed on the north end of Ocracoke between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the ferry terminal.
Both sections of the highway shut down yesterday because the ocean overwash was creating dangerous driving conditions.
Crews will be working to clear these areas ahead of this afternoon’s high tide.
The NCDOT reports that Highway 12 is passable and open elsewhere, but urges drivers to be cautious due to sand and water on the roadway.
