The Delaware Department of Justice is part of a lawsuit against the Trump Administration for what Attorney General Kathy Jennings said would be the illegal suspension of SNAP benefits.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are set to be suspended Saturday due to the federal government shutdown. Jennings said states are responsible for administering SNAP benefits, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not have the authority to freeze benefits.

“Let me put this simply: if SNAP benefits do not go out next month, our state’s food banks will be overwhelmed, and thousands of Delawareans will go hungry,” Jennings said. “That cannot happen. The Trump Administration has both a moral and a legal obligation to prevent that from happening – and they can do so whenever they wish.”
