As Melissa continues to barrel through the Caribbean, the late-season hurricane has already shattered several records.

Melissa was a Category 5 hurricane, the highest level, when it made landfall Tuesday in Jamaica. It was the strongest to hit the island since recordkeeping began 174 years ago. Melissa caused power outages, fallen trees, landslides, and heavy flooding and tore off roofs in Jamaica.

Among landfalling hurricanes

Melissa is the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the Atlantic, tied with the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane for both wind speed (185 mph) and pressure (892 mb). It is also the strongest hurricane recorded this late (the last week of October) in a hurricane season.
