PHOENIX -- Attorney General Kris Mayes is asking a federal judge to order the Trump administration to use $5 billion in a contingency fund to ensure that nearly 900,000 Arizonans get their November allotment of food stamps.
The lawsuit filed Tuesday by Mayes and other Democratic colleagues contends that Congress gave the U.S. Department of Agriculture the specific permission to use the dollars in that account for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, as it is known, in any case there was a government shutdown. And as of Tuesday there was no progress -- nor even negotiations -- to restart various programs and services that were halted when there was not a new federal budget agreement by Oct. 1.
