JAMAICA, — Hurricane Melissa came through the Atlantic Basin this week and rocked the 2025 Hurricane Season. Until now, it had been a pretty quiet season with most storms spending most (if not all) of their life over open water. This storm came in and escalated quickly with multiple landfalls and multiple records.

Melissa made landfall near Black River, Jamaica, on Oct. 28 as a Category 5 Hurricane. The update from the National Hurricane Center ahead of landfall reported winds of 185 mph, gusts to 220 mph, and a pressure of 892 mb.

That ties Melissa for the 3rd strongest storm on record for the Atlantic Basin by pressure. It ties with the “Labor Day” Hurricane of 1935 and comes in behind Gilbert in 1988 (888 mb) and Wilma in 2005 (882 mb). This storm was the strongest to ever make lan
