GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids woman learned her sentence in connection with her child's asphyxiation death. It happened while she ran into a store to grab her husband's lunch, court documents reveal.
A judge sentenced 27-year-old Angelica Arechiga to 45 days in jail and 24 months of probation on Wednesday. She was charged with one count of child abuse that resulted in death, and pleaded no contest to that charge in August.
The judge granted her 1 day of jail credit.
Officers were called to La Tienda, a store on South Division Avenue, around noon on October 9. There, they found a child who was not breathing.
The one-year-old girl was sent to Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. She was pronounced dead an hour later, court documents say.
