The ACT government has been recruiting new "Transit Enforcement Officers" to deal with people who are harassing passengers or drivers on buses.

They will also patrol buses to catch people who failed to pay.

The step-up in enforcement comes after bus drivers went on strike saying they had been the victims of countless verbal and physical attacks, including one case of fish heads allegedly being poured over a bus driver. The strike on November 15 kept all public buses in the depot.

It prompted the government to install screens to protect bus drivers from aggressive passengers. That's now been followed by the recruitment of the new squad of eight Transit Enforcement Officers, working in pairs. They have the power to impose a $380 fine.
