The territory will soon have its first dementia-specific care facility, following the sale of land in the inner south.

Aged care provider HammondCare bought the former site of Curtin Primary School, located on Carruthers Street, from the Suburban Land Agency for $18 million and intends to construct the ACT's first purpose-built dementia village on the site.

Home support for dementia is offered in Canberra, but for the more than 6000 people living with the condition in the territory - a figure projected to double by 2055 - an alternative is needed.
