It was almost 4am when Kelsey woke up to see lights shining in the hallway of her Melbourne townhouse.

The 32-year-old was lying in bed when she realised two men were just metres away from her room.

"I felt like my heart was beating in my throat," she recalled.

"I was petrified."

She said one burglar was making a racket in the hallway after getting his foot tangled in a cat tunnel.

She listened, as the pair discussed their next move.

Then, she recalled one of the men entering her bedroom.

"He came into my doorway, flashed his light around, saw that I was awake," she said.

"I think he just said, 'Oh shit', and turned around.

" I definitely did feel like my life was threatened. "

But it was what happened next that she described as a "horror movie".
