General Motors will temporarily lay off 700 employees at its Ultium Cells battery plant in Spring Hill amidst sluggishness in the electric vehicle market.
Collectively, and according to multiple media reports, the Detroit-based company said Wednesday it has laid off approximately 3,400 workers at various manufacturing facilities, including in Michigan and Ohio. The job cuts come as the company has seen a recent reduction in demand for its electric vehicles.
GM said battery cell production undertaken at its Ohio and Tennessee plants will temporarily pause as of January, with the company expecting to jumpstart production at both facilities by mid-2026. GM plans to upgrade the facilities during the pause.
As reported in late 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy loaned Ultium Cells $2.5 bill
