Oregon National Guard troops were on the ground at Portland’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building on Oct. 4 hours after a federal judge had issued a temporary restraining order barring the federal deployment of state troops to the city, a U.S. Department of Justice attorney admitted Wednesday.
The acknowledgement came moments before a federal trial got underway on whether President Donald Trump lawfully mobilized National Guard troops to Portland from Oregon and California, while promising to send more from Texas.
The federal Justice Department Attorney Jean Lin did not say how many state National Guard troops were at the Portland ICE facility after the ban, but court exhibits indicate an “Advanced MP squad,” of nine troop members had arrived at the Portland ICE facility
