Starting Saturday, thousands of Western Massachusetts families could lose their food assistance, but Congressman Richard Neal says there’s money sitting unused that could prevent it.

The congressman says the president has contingency money that is set aside for SNAP benefits that could be used during this month-long government shutdown, but is choosing not to use it.

“I think what is exhausting here is the argument that the President has the money, all he has to do is agree to spend it. Some states are attempting to intervene, whether that can be done in Massachusetts, I don’t know.”
