COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - A new project at Texas A&M is documenting eight pioneering women artists who fought for their place in the Dallas art scene in the 1970s.

It’s a multiyear initiative of the Texas Art Project at Texas A&M and Art This Week Productions .

The project reconstructs the forgotten history of DW Gallery in Dallas (1975-1988), an artist-run space that would launch the careers of some of the most prominent artists in Texas and America.

DW Gallery was founded by eight women who struggled to have their work shown in the mainstream Dallas art scene.

“So they said, ‘We’re going to make our own gallery.’ And they banded together and did just that,” explained Dr. Tianna Uchacz, who leads the project.
