HARRISON CO., Miss. (WLOX) - On Wednesday, fifth graders from DeLisle Elementary planted 724 native trees, grasses and shrubs at Pecan Grove Landfill as part of a hands-on environmental education experience.
The students teamed up with Tandem Global and the Mississippi Native Plant Society to learn about protecting native species and restoring habitats. The project created a 1,500-square-foot microhabitat at the landfill.
“I’ve always wanted to do planting because my dad always loves to plant, and it’s just a once-in-a-lifetime experience for a kid,” said Marcus Fowler, a fifth grader.

“We’ve learned about invasive plants and pollinators and monarch butterflies, and right now we’re planting plants,” said Claire Ladner, a fifth grader.
