Environment Minister Murray Watt has laid down the law over landmark nature reforms, telling the opposition and the Greens not to make outlandish demands while negotiating the overhaul.

Senator Watt's environmental protection reform bill will be introduced into parliament on Thursday, and the government is hoping to pass it by the end of the year.

But it needs the support of either the coalition or the Greens to get the changes through the Senate.

Senator Watt said he was open to passing the bill with help from either party but the laws needed to go through as a balanced package.

"If either side sets ridiculous demands for us, then we've got another option to pass these laws," he told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.
