ROCHESTER, Minn. - A vital program that supports low-income families is at risk of losing federal funding on November 1st. Head Start, a federal initiative, provides childcare, learning experiences, meals, and health screenings for low-income children and families.
Head Start representatives have emphasized the importance of maintaining these services, urging Congress not to disrupt the program amid the government shutdown.
With grant renewals approaching on November 1st for 10% of the programs, there is concern about service lapses for families relying on Head Start in their daily lives.
In Iowa, the program serves around 6,800 children annually, affecting 623 slots and 162 staff members. In Minnesota, about 12,500 children from infants to pre-kindergarten age benefit from the program.
