As the line outside the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen grew on Olive Street Wednesday, workers inside prepared for what they expect will soon be larger crowds.

“We’ve been seeing a steady increase for many months now, just as the need has increased,” Steve Werlin, executive director of the Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, said. “But what we’re expecting, really starting in November, is just a lot more people.”

That surge is expected as federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits come to an end for many recipients on Nov. 1, leaving households that have never used food pantries before looking for help.
