HOUSTON (KIAH) - Houston Food Bank officials said Wednesday that more than 500 vehicles filled with federal employees arrived at the Barnett Sports Complex parking lot for help keeping food in the pantry.

From 3 to 7 p.m., volunteers worked nonstop, loading boxes of food, including vegetables, grains, milk, and canned goods, into trunks to help feed families missing paychecks. For many, this marked the longest shutdown of their careers. Many of them sat in line at least an hour before the gates opened.

Many seek relief as the government shutdown reached its 30th day. Congressman Al Green joined volunteers on site, helping pack boxes and personally handing food to families. Green called the event a “powerful reminder” of the real people affected by the political gridlock in Washington.
