ROCKFORD, Ill. (WREX) — Rockford mayor, Tom McNamara, hosted his annual Hunger Luncheon Wednesday afternoon in downtown Rockford at Veteran's Memorial Hall.
The room was filled with a sold-out crowd of local leaders and organizations.
The campaign raises money for local food pantries, with $50,000 coming in to support the cause this year.
This comes amid the backdrop of the government shutdown and the potential loss of SNAP benefits starting this weekend.
"I think what's really important to note though is we have tremendous need right now. We're seeing more than a 200% increase of those who need services over the last several years at let's say, the Rock River Valley Pantry. Understanding that SNAP benefits may be cut starting on November 1st, Saturday, that needs only going to amplify
