TOKYO - Governor Tina Kotek (D-Ore.) has declared a 60-day food security emergency in response to the federal government shutdown cutting off SNAP benefits for 757,000 Oregonians.
According to the Governor's office, $5 million will be directed to Oregon’s statewide food bank network to assist families in need. Kotek emphasized the urgency of state action, urging Oregonians to support their communities.
"While the Republican-controlled Congress fails to do its job, Oregon will do ours," Kotek said. "I call on all Oregonians to do what they can to help their neighbors."
The emergency declaration activates state resources to ensure food reaches vulnerable families, especially during the holiday season. The declaration aims to expedite the resumption of SNAP benefits once the shutdown ends.
