BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) - As foot traffic starts to ramp up at local retail stores, members of law enforcement are keeping an eye out for shoppers hoping to help themselves to a five-finger discount.

Dropping temperatures and the approaching holiday season have been just some of the factors contributing to a reported uptick in shoplifting incidents. Sgt. B.J. Adkins with the Raleigh County Sheriff's Office said the increase is typical for this time of year. He said perpetrators can take advantage of the limited visibility which comes along with the holiday shopping months. "When you go in and it's crowded and all this, it gives the opportunity for those that want to blend in and maybe shoplift because they know you can't be everywhere at once," said Sgt. Adkins.
