BANGOR, Maine — Deer versus vehicle collisions are on the rise statewide this year. According to the Maine Department of Transportation , there have been 5,135 accidents involving deer as of Wednesday afternoon.

Cassidy Burns was behind the wheel during one of those crashes, and while the damage to her car looks minor at first glance, the estimated repair cost is about $3,000.

“There were cars coming towards us, there were cars in front of me. I slammed on my brakes. Unfortunately, I did end up hitting the deer,” Burns said.

With the uptick in hits, repair shops are seeing more business. Denise Morse, the general manager at Maine Collisions Center by Vive, believes deer related repairs at her shop have tripled in the last 10 years.
