DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa's furbearer season kicks off on November 1, with most species populations in strong condition according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
“Most species are trending higher, except for gray fox and possibly muskrats,” said Vince Evelsizer, furbearer and wetland biologist. He noted that muskrats might see a population boost due to early spring rains filling wetlands.
Water levels have improved across Iowa, benefiting species like muskrats. Evelsizer said, “A lot of north Iowa marshes have water in them... We’re not expecting freeze up for water trappers.”
Approximately 15,000 Iowans participate in the fur harvest season, a number that has remained steady since 2020. Interest in trapping has increased, partly due to workshops and educational program
