Washington, D.C. [KWWL] — The federal government shutdown has now reached 28 days, with funding for SNAP benefits set to run out by the end of the week. Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley is urging lawmakers to restore food assistance programs.
“This is a noncontroversial program that feeds the hungry and has been supported by Republicans and Democrats for five or six decades,” Grassley said. “So, I urge my colleagues to come to their senses, reopen the government, and make sure families on food stamps keep receiving the benefits they need and deserve.”
Approximately 260,000 Iowans rely on food assistance, and as the shutdown continues, food banks are calling for donations to meet the growing need.
