New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer could be out of action for a longer time than what was initially expected after suffering a spleen injury during the third ODI between India and Australia.

He ran backwards from point to take a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey but suffered the injury when he hit the ground with the ball in his hands on Saturday.

After being stretchered off to the dressing room, his vital parameters dropped forcing the BCCI medical unit to rush him to a hospital in Sydney.

Tests later revealed that he suffered from internal bleeding and had to be operated to be taken out of danger and is expected to under recivery in the Sydney hospital for at least a week.
