In the early 2000s, there was a TV commercial in heavy rotation aimed at senior citizens for a greeting card service that would continue to send birthday cards or other annual greetings to grandchildren and loved ones after the client had died.

Some might find that endearing or sweet. I get that, sort of. Personally, I was a bit put off by the idea of monetizing death in such a weird way. The whole thing — from my perspective — kind of hinged on exploiting an unspoken insecurity among the elderly that they will not be remembered when they're gone. Ick. Also, greeting cards from beyond the grave? Double ick.

Of course, those concerns seem naive when compared to what is happening now.
