Maine (WAGM) - Thousands of Maine households will not receive critical heating assistance as winter approaches due to a federal funding shortage affecting the Energy Crisis Intervention Program.
The program, known as ECIP, typically opens Nov. 1 but cannot distribute approximately $38 million in federal funds this year.
The delay affects seniors and families with young children who rely on the emergency heating aid.
“With no federal funds available, we cannot proceed with the program,” said Daniel Brennan, MaineHousing director. “We understand the severe impact this will have on Maine families, especially as winter approaches, and we share their anxiety.”
Community action agencies will continue to process HEAP applications but cannot issue payments until funding is secured.
