The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994, is a Central legislation enacted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, to prohibit sex selection and regulate the use of pre-natal diagnostic techniques. Amended in 2003, the Act aims to prevent female foeticide by banning the misuse of technology for sex determination before or after conception. The Act mandates the registration of all diagnostic and imaging centres and prescribes stringent penalties for violations.
