PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – A potential pause in federal food assistance due to the ongoing government shutdown could impact local pet owners, forcing difficult choices between feeding their families and their pets.
The Peoria Humane Society is stepping in to support families facing these challenges.
Education Coordinator Kitty Yanko tells 25 News, “We do anticipate that anytime pet owners are struggling financially that there is a possibility that they will have to consider surrendering their animal or giving it away.”
While they haven’t seen an increase in animals surrendered to Peoria’s shelter due to the shutdown, PHS is offering assistance with pet food, discounted spay and neuter services, and pet supplies.
