BEAUMONT, Texas — The Port Neches City Council is racing to preserve a deteriorating historic home that has sat vacant for a decade, with a decision on whether to pursue ownership expected in December.
La Maison Beausoleil, known as the Cajun House, was built in the 1810s in Louisiana and relocated to Port Neches in 1985 via the Neches River. The structure now sits at Port Neches Riverfront Park in severe disrepair, with shingles and siding falling off and one barn roof close to caving in.
The Jefferson County Historical Commission says the property serves as a location to help connect people with their Cajun roots, but that connection may be severed as the house deteriorates. The original property group, Les Acadian de Texas, no longer owns the property, which has been abandoned for 1
