NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The Department of Homeland Security will no longer automatically extend employment authorization documents, also known as work visas, for immigrants filing renewal applications, according to an announcement on Wednesday.
Beginning Thursday, people who file for renewal will now have to wait for their applications to be individually reviewed by the Department of Homeland Security, the notice said.
Anyone who needs a work visa renewed is advised to do so at least six months in advance. DHS warns that waiting longer to do so could result in a temporary lapse in employment authorization.
Exceptions to the new rule will include extensions provided by law or through a Federal Register notice for people with temporary protected status.
