PEORIA ( 25News Now ) - Furry friends could feel the squeeze if federal food assistance pauses while the government shutdown continues.

The Peoria Humane Society is stepping in to prevent families from having to make the difficult choice between feeding themselves or their pets.

While they are not aware of an increase in animals coming into the Peoria Animal Shelter due to the government shutdown, PHS is helping with pet food, discounted spay and neuter services, and pet supplies.

“We do anticipate that anytime pet owners are struggling financially that there is a possibility that they will have to consider surrendering their animal or giving it away,” Director of the Peoria Humane Society Kitty Yanko said.
