President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday appointed Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India.

Chief Justice of India B R Gavai will demit office on November 23. Justice Kant will serve as CJI for nearly 15 months until his retirement on February 9, 2027.

In a post on X, Union Minister for State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Singh Meghwal said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November, 2025.”

CJI Gavai had written to the Union government on October 27 recommending Justice Kant as his successor.
