Justice Surya Kant was Thursday appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will take oath as the 53rd CJI on November 24 and will have a tenure of about 14 months, serving at the highest judicial post until February 9, 2027.
Justice Kant will be the first jurist from Haryana to occupy the post of the Chief Justice of India.

The development comes days after CJI Gavai initiated the process for appointing his successor by recommending Justice Surya Kant, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court after him, to the Central government.
The recommendation follows the Law Ministry’s October 23 communication requesting the outgoing Chief Justice to name his successor.
The incumbent CJI Justice Bhushan R Gavai is set to demit office on November 23.
