Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. is expected to win reelection in the Democratic stronghold, but his political future could unravel weeks later when he goes on trial for allegedly abusing his teenage daughter .

Atlantic City mayoral terms start in January, about two months after the general election. If Small is convicted before taking office, he would be barred from serving. State law prohibits anyone convicted of a third-degree crime or higher from holding public office.

In that case, the City Council would appoint an acting mayor until a special election is held to fill the remainder of the four-year term.
