UK households have been warned that they are set to see an increase in their annual energy bills, as part of a move to write off up to £500 million of energy bill debt.

Ofgem said the move will help around 195,000 households who fell behind on repayments during the energy crisis .

But the regulator warned that bill payers are set to see a £5 increase in their annual energy bills over the 2027/28 year as suppliers look to regain unpaid debts by spreading the cost across UK households.

The news comes after figures published by Ofgem last month showed the debt owed to suppliers by households in England, Scotland and Wales had surged to a record high of £4.4 billion by the end of June.
