Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain at a stalemate on finding a government funding solution to end what is now the second-longest shutdown in U.S. history.
Maryland Rep. Kweisi Mfume spoke on the C4 and Bryan Nehman Show Thursday morning. The congressman said the shutdown should not have lasted this long.
“The reality is we shouldn’t have gotten this far to begin with,” Mfume said. “I mean, the Republican Party, with all due respect, controls the House, the Senate and the White House.”

Mfume said in the Senate, they have what is known as a filibuster rule, which says you cannot vote on something substantial unless you are able to get 60 votes. Republicans have 53 votes, Democrats have 47.
