A former Lawrence police captain was arrested Wednesday by federal authorities for allegedly assaulting a detainee and later lying about it in an incident report, records show.

Michael M. Mangan, 47, of Derry, N.H ., pleaded not guilty on Wednesday afternoon in US District Court in Boston on charges of deprivation of rights under color of law and making a false report, according to legal filings.

A lawyer for Mangan couldn’t immediately be reached for comment. Mangan retired early in January due to an unrelated on-duty injury.

An indictment handed up Tuesday said Mangan on March 10, 2023, allegedly “assaulted arrestee Victim 1,” which “resulted in bodily injury to Victim 1.”
