HARRISBURG — With the indefinite suspension of SNAP food benefits set to begin Saturday, jeopardizing nutrition aid for 2 million low-income Pennsylvanians, Treasurer Stacy Garrity offered a potential solution — a short-term loan to cover next month’s cost for the federal program.
Garrity proposed a loan from Treasury’s Short-Term Investment Pool, or STIP, to cover all of the estimated $366 million held up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program amid the ongoing federal government shutdown. She said the funds could be released within a day or two.
