BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. — A Bradford County correctional deputy has been fired after being arrested for allegedly stealing money from a jail inmate, the sheriff's office announced Thursday.
Francis Highland faces two felony charges of fraudulently obtaining under $20,000 and one misdemeanor charge of petit theft.
According to the Bradford County Sheriff's Office, on Wednesday at approximately 6:30 p.m., detectives received information about $550 being stolen from a "jail inmate account."
BCSO said a computer audit conducted during its investigation into the incident revealed that a correctional deputy may have intentionally taken the stolen money from a jail banking account.
BCSO said Highland confessed to stealing the money after waiving his Miranda Rights during an interview.
