The City Council, including all members from Queens, unanimously voted, 48-0 in favor of the Jamaica Neighborhood Plan at Council Chambers in City Hall on Wednesday night.
Councilmembers Darlene Mealy (D-Brooklyn), Kamillah Hanks (D-Staten Island) and Yusef Salaam (D-Manhattan) were absent for the vote.
The plan rezones 230 blocks in Downtown Jamaica and surrounding corridors, said Council Speaker Adrienne Adams (D-Jamaica).
It will immediately go into effect once Mayor Adams signs it.
During the Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning & Franchises and Committee on Land Use forums earlier this month, it was announced the plan allows for the creation of approximately 11,800 new homes, including 4,175 permanently affordable units — 3,778 would be on private sites.
