A scam that included a fake police station set and several characters has cost a Burnaby woman a $1,000,000 this summer.

Fraudsters posing as employees of a phone company contacted the woman in June, saying she had been linked to a fraud investigation, and was redirected to what she believed was a foreign police station, speaking to several different people she believed were law enforcement agents.

Communication even moved to video conferencing, where the background seemed to show an ‘elaborate’ police station, convincing the victim she was dealing with legitimate authorities. The scammers even provided the woman with her own passport and driver’s licence numbers, further compounding her belief in their legitimacy.
