AUBURN, Maine — Federal funding for SNAP is scheduled to run out Saturday due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, putting roughly 170,000 Mainers who rely on those benefits at risk of going without.
During a press conference Thursday at Good Shepard Food Bank in Auburn, Gov. Janet Mills called on the Trump administration to use emergency reserves to fund SNAP during the shutdown.
"The president needs to tell the USDA to expend the $5 billion in contingency funds that is already authorized by the Congress for situations just like this,” Mills said.
On Wednesday, Mills announced that the state will provide $1.25 million in funding to support food‑aid organizations during the expected funding gap.
One of the largest recipients is Good Shepherd Food Bank, which is receiving $650,00
