In a another major shift to US immigration policy, the Donald Trump administration has announced the end of automatic work permit extensions for certain categories of migrants, tightening the process for employment authorisation renewals. The decision reverses a Biden-era measure that had allowed eligible immigrants to continue working legally while their renewal applications were pending with immigration authorities.
Under the new directive, effective October 30, 2025, applicants who file to renew their Employment Authorisation Document (EAD) will no longer receive an automatic extension of their work rights. This means individuals must stop working once their current permit expires, even if their renewal is still being processed.
