Rogue Liberal backbencher Andrew Hastie says he will not attend a key meeting of coalition MPs on energy policy because he needs to have surgery on his shoulder, which he injured doing jiu jitsu.
The outspoken MP from Western Australia is a fierce opponent of Australia's climate targets and has been urging the Liberals to walk away from any commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
Coalition backbenchers will have a chance to discuss the issue during a hotly anticipated sit-down with opposition energy spokesman Dan Tehan in Canberra on Friday morning.
Mr Tehan has been criss-crossing the globe as he leads a review of the coalition's policy, including its commitment to net zero following its disastrous election defeat in May.
