LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Election Day preparations are underway across Mid-Michigan, as local clerks push for stronger voter turnout.

People might wake up the morning after Election Day to find out their taxes have increased, or that someone new is representing them on city council.

They’re major changes, and yet, not every voice is heard when those decisions get made.

“You know, big decisions are made in small elections,” said Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope. “I mean, we’re electing the mayor for the next four years. We’re deciding on whether to adopt or revise city charter.”

During special and general elections that don’t involve presidential or gubernatorial races, voter participation drops significantly across the region.
