LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Lincoln County man is warning others in the region about avian flu after apparently losing his backyard flock because of contact with wild birds.
Panaca resident Kyle Hubbard advised others with livestock birds after losing 15 chickens, three ducks and a turkey — all within a week. Panaca is about 165 miles from Las Vegas, and a short distance from the Utah border.
On Oct. 7, a possible outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) was identified at two wildlife habitats in Lincoln County — Key Pittman Wildlife Management Area and Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge. That report brought cautions for hunters, urging them to follow precautions to avoid exposure and protect their hunting dogs.
