STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Connecticut-based nonprofit Americares sent an emergency response team to Jamaica which is expected to arrive Thursday in the wake of the Category 5 Hurricane Melissa.
According to Americares, the team will be on one of the first flights arriving on the island after the reopening of Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston. The group expects to be among the first international relief organizations on the ground in Jamaica after the hurricane.
The team will focus on restoring health services in communities affected by the storm, including areas cut off from the island's power grid due to downed trees and flooding. They are also ready to coordinate distribution of medicine and other supplies, as well as provide emergency funding to help health facilities re
