MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - A federal grand jury has indicted a woman on an international kidnapping charge in a case that has drawn widespread attention.
Federal prosecutors allege that Haley Leah Harris took her 3-year-old daughter from her father’s house in Orange Beach last month and smuggled her to Mexico, where her boyfriend was living. If convicted, she faces a maximum of three years in prison.
Authorities eventually arranged the return of the child to the United States. It was an effort that involved assistance from U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-Enterprise).
Defense attorney Richard Shields told FOX10 News that he expected an indictment.
“I’m not suprised she was indicted,” he said. “But I’m not sure the best place to handle this is federal court.”
