SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) - As Nov. 1 and the potential freeze on Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits draw nearer, Superior Mayor Jim Paine is proposing an emergency plan to help feed residents.
Paine’s plan would redirect $200,000 from the city’s economic development fund to a food assistance grant program.
He says it would allow the city to help fund entities that help feed the community, including nonprofits, food shelves, and even for-profit businesses addressing food stability needs.

According to Paine, Douglas County currently receives roughly $750,000 a month for SNAP benefits.
